Description

Elcombe Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating from the mid-18th century. It features dressed stone walls and a slate roof with gable ends and stone gable copings. There is a reconstituted stone stack on the left gable, which is a 20th-century addition, while the right gable has a stack embrasure with the stack removed from the top. The building has two storeys and five windows, which are 2-light wooden casements with glazing bars that have been renewed in the 20th century. A 3-light casement is located at the north end on the ground floor.

The farmhouse has a stone porch with stone gable coping and an ornamental apex block. The entrance is square with moulded jambs and heads, and there is a projecting heart-shaped stone above the entrance featuring an unfinished inscription: "Hec bomus Aedific" (sic). Each side of the porch has an oval moulded stone window. The front door is a two-leaf design with recess-fielded panels and a wooden frame, dating back to the 18th century.

On the south gable end, there is an original outshut with stone gable coping and a moulded kneeler, topped with a slate pentice roof. Above this, there is an 18th-century attic window with a 2-light stone mullion and a moulded label above it.

Inside, the farmhouse retains a very intact 18th-century interior, featuring extensive fielded panelling in both the ground and first floor rooms. The kitchen, which was formerly located in the left ground floor, includes a built-in 18th-century dresser and shelves. The lobby entrance leads to a continuous newel stair with bulbous balusters and a rolled handrail, also from the 18th century, surrounding a small central stairwell.
