Description
The Parish Church of St Michael is a significant building originally constructed between the 12th and 15th centuries. At the end of the 15th century, the old chancel was replaced with a complete church of West Country type. While the transepts and the western part of the 12th-century nave have been demolished, the tower and the eastern part of the old nave remain, with the latter now serving as a porch. The church has undergone restorations in 1834, 1901, 1930, and 1933, and a south vestry was added in 1885. Inside, there is a 17th-century gallery and pulpit, along with various monuments, floor slabs, and brasses. Notably, there is a tapestry referenced in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, Dorset, Volume I. The church is part of a group with Nos 46 to 57 on Church Street, which includes the churchyard wall and railings, and it also forms a group with Nos 7 to 9 on Monmouth Street.
