Description

The United Mines Engine House is a roofless beam engine house dating from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of killas and granite rubble, featuring granite ashlar facing on the bob wall and dressed granite quoins, jambstones, and bonding stones. The chimney has brick arches and a brick upper stage. The building has a rectangular single-cell plan, with a thicker bob wall on the south side and a clasping round chimney at the northwest corner. Originally three storeys over a basement, it is now roofless and floorless, but all stone and brick walls remain intact at their original height, having been repaired and repointed in 1983. The bob wall on the south side includes a round-headed granite arch over a doorway, while other openings feature round-headed brick arches. The north gable end has a central opening on each floor, with the ground floor opening being larger. The chimney has a brick collar near the top. This classic engine house has been thoroughly repaired and serves as an industrial monument.
