Description

Eldons Engine House, also known as Ivey House, is a beam engine house ruin dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from killas and granite rubble, featuring granite jambstones and coursed dressed granite on the bob wall. The building has timber lintels, a one-brick arch on the west side, and a brick upper stage for the chimney. It has a rectangular single-cell plan with a round chimney that clasps the southwest corner. The bob wall on the east side is thicker and survives to the original height of the stone walling. The structure was originally three storeys high and now remains up to the top of the first-floor level, with only vestiges of the second-floor walling attached to the chimney. The west wall features a round-headed brick-arched opening on the ground floor and above. The original framing and weatherboarding to the second floor and gable have been lost, leaving only the ground floor opening. The tapered rubble chimney rises to the height of a projecting granite ovolo-moulded collar, with a reduced-width brick stage above. This beam engine house is an important early example that was repaired as a ruin in 1985.
