Description

GWENNAP SW 74 SE 5/96 Cusvey Mines, Engine House at - SW 757419 SE part of the Consolidated Mines GV II Beam engine house ruin. Circa early C19. Killas rubble walls with dressed granite quoins, jambstones and voussoirs. Mostly timber lintels. Rectangular single-cell plan with thicker bob wall to north east. Originally with 3 floors. Bob wall 2 floors high has ground floor doorway with segmental granite arch with projecting keystone. Smaller segmental external arch splayed internally to larger round-headed rear arch. This is a design feature for maximum load bearing, with the knowledge that the inner arch has greater abutment due to the linked mass of the return walls. North west wall fairly intact, has ground floor window opening spanned by large granite lintel but other openings have timber lintels, except south west wall with large door opening spanned by round-headed brick arch. Part of walling of gable end survives above. South east wall is half-fallen. Detached chimney on higher ground to south (see separate item). Very similar in design but probably slightly earlier than: Engine House, Consolidated Mines qv.
