Description

Cusvey Mines, Engine House is a ruin of a beam engine house dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed from killas rubble and features timber lintels. The building has a rectangular single-cell plan with a round chimney at the east corner. The northwest wall is thicker at the ground floor, suggesting it may be an early evolutionary example. Originally, all walls were the same height, which is possibly a unique feature. Parts of each wall have now collapsed. Very few beam engine houses from the 18th century remain, and this example provides physical evidence of the design challenges faced at the time in supporting the heavy beam over the bob wall. Further study is needed.
