Description

GWENNAP SW 74 SE 5/98 Cusvey Mines, Engine House - part of the Consolidated Mines GV II Beam engine house ruin. Circa late C18. Killas rubble. Timber lintels. Rectangular single-cell plan with round chimney clasping east corner. North west wall is thicker to ground floor and is presumably an evolutionary early example. All walls originally the same height, another possibly unique feature. Parts of each wall now fallen. Very few beam engine houses survive from the C18 and this example stands as physical evidence of the then unresolved design problems associated with carrying the heavy beam over the bob wall. Further study needed.
