Description

The Consolidated Mines Clocktower is a clocktower dating from the early 19th century, constructed from killas rubble with granite quoins, jambstones, voussoirs, and copings. It features a round tapered tower that sits on an octagonal base. The clock has been removed or has fallen. There is a round-headed doorway on the west side and a square section granite string above the basement. About one-third of the way up from the base, there are narrowed round-headed openings on both the west and east sides. The top of the tower is adorned with an ovolo-moulded collar or coping, and there is a lightning conductor on the south side.

Inside, the walls are smoke-blackened, suggesting that the structure may have been used as a flue. A wooden first floor remains in place, and there are holes at intervals in the wall that indicate the former location of a stair. This unique tower is largely intact, missing only its upper timber work, and is a remnant of a mining complex that reached its peak in the 1830s. During this time, Consols was the most productive mine in Cornwall.
