Description

GWENNAP SW 74 SW 4/92 Consolidated Mines, Clocktower 21.11.85 GV II Clocktower. Circa early C19. Killas rubble with granite quoins, jambstones, voussoirs and copings. Round tapered tower over octagonal base. Clock removed or fallen. Round-headed doorway to west. Square section granite string over basement. About 1/3 way up from base is narrowed round-headed opening to west and to east. Ovolo-moulded collar or coping to top of tower. Lightning conductor to south. Interior is smoke-blackened over the rubble walls so possibly has been used as a flue. Wooden first floor in situ. Holes at intervals to wall for former stair. This unique tower stands complete except for upper timber work; surviving from mining complex which reached it zenith in the 1830's. Consols was this time the most productive mine in Cornwall.
