Description

The structure is a pair of tunnels located under a railway embankment, built in the early 19th century for The Redruth and Chasewater Railway. They feature granite arches and copings, elvan vaults, and killas walling. Each tunnel is approximately 35 meters long and situated at a higher level for road access. The embankment is supported by battered coped rubble walls, with sloping return walls that buttress the angles. The tunnels have horseshoe-shaped portals on the east and west sides, which are made of crudely rock-faced granite voussoirs and jambstones, with keystones that rise to a higher level. Inside, each tunnel has a coursed elvan vault. These tunnels are located near the main intersection of the railway, which crosses the embankment towards Poldice Mine. Although they were planned to be extended to Chacewater, this extension was never completed. The Redruth and Chasewater Railway was established in 1824 and was initially horse-drawn until the introduction of steam locomotives in 1854.
