Description

Charmouth Tunnel consists of two entrances to a road tunnel on the A35, located about one mile northwest of Charmouth. Built in 1832, the tunnel features stone construction with rusticated stone jambs and dressed stone voussoirs, which include projecting keystones above elliptical arches. Above each arch, there is coursed rubble walling with a string-course and parapet that has flat coping stones. The parapets extend down to road level as cutting revetment and end in short square piers that are also coped. The tunnel measures 220 feet 6 inches in length, with a span of 19 feet 7 inches and a height from the road to the head of the arch of 19 feet.
