Description
Thistle House and the attached brick terrace wall are located on Axminster Road in Wootton Fitzpaine. The large house, designed by F W Troup, was built in 1911. It features brick walls made of Dutch clinkers arranged in stretcher bond, with tiled string courses. The roof is tiled, has a slight bell-cast profile, and features projecting eaves, hipped ends, and a small gablet on the right side. The west elevation is two storeys high and has four windows, which are wooden cross-transom casements with segmental heads and small leaded lights. The front door is recessed from the wall, creating a porch effect, and has a segmental brick head supported by octagonal stone piers with moulded capitals and bases. There is a canted bay with four-light casements at one end, balanced by a similar feature at the other end. The south-east ridge of the house has a small bellcote.
Inside, the house features heavy chamfered beams with run-out stops in a Vernacular Revival style, supported by corbels. The drawing room has a stone fireplace, and there are plank-and-muntin studded doors. The wooden staircase includes heavy turned columns and a double-headed newel.
The attached brick terrace wall along the south front has an openwork brick trellis design and brick piers spaced every three metres. The east front includes a brick-floored terrace with brick columns supporting the trellis work. Brick stairs at the south-east corner connect the terrace to the garden.
