Description
This listing describes a group of two tombchests and two headstones located 2 to 6 metres east of the south transept of the Church of St Materiana in Tintagel. The tombchest, dated 1737, commemorates Thomas, the son of John Avery. It is made of slate stone rubble and features a rectangular slate lid. To the north is another tombchest from the mid-18th century, also constructed of slate stone rubble with a rectangular slate lid. This tombchest has a marginal inscription and verse in the central panel, although the lettering is eroded and partly illegible.
One of the headstones, dated 1824, is in memory of Martin Harvey of Bossiney and is made of slate with a round head. The other headstone, from 1763, commemorates Joan, the wife of Thomas Granvill and daughter of Henry Bray. This rectangular slate headstone is inscribed with an angel's head, an hourglass, a heart, and an inscription.
