Description

The lychgate, located to the east of the Church of St Materiana in Tintagel, is likely from the 18th century and constructed of slate stone rubble. This unroofed structure serves as the east entrance to the churchyard, cutting through a thick stone hedge. Inside, the two side walls feature slate benches. The entrance is divided in the center by a low slate-rubble pier topped with a flat slate, which acts as a coffin rest. There are granite cattle grids positioned between the central coffin rest and the side walls. The northeast corner of the lychgate has been partially rebuilt in the 20th century. A similar lychgate can be found to the south of the Church of St Materiana.
