Description
Vicarage Cottage is a house dating from around the early 19th century, with extensions added around the mid-19th century. It’s built of slate stone rubble with brick dressings, and has a slate roof with gable ends to the front and rear of the central range. The single-story front wings have castellated parapets, while the higher two-story ranges to the right and left are set back. A brick side stack is on the right side of the building.
The plan has likely been altered considerably, and the house may have originally been a two-room, double-depth house, extended in the mid-19th century with two parallel, two-room, double-depth wings – single-story at the front and two-story at the rear. The entrance is in the left-hand side wall.
The front elevation is particularly picturesque, with a two-story central range flanked by two single-story wings with castellated parapets, and the two-story wings set back. The front has a symmetrical appearance, with a 19th-century centre-hung two-light casement in a two-centered arched opening, likely originally a doorway. To the right and left are tall, round-headed blind openings, each with a single-light casement in a two-centered arched opening within the flanking wings. The first floor has a central two-light casement in a two-centered arched opening, and the first floor of the flanking two-story wings has two-light casements in two-centered arched openings.
The interior was largely remodelled in the early 20th century. The cottage is located close to Tintagel Vicarage.
