Description
The lychgate to the west of the Church of St Merteriana is a structure dating from around 1870, likely built during the restoration of the church by J P St Aubyn. Constructed from slate-stone rubble with reused granite dressings, this unroofed lychgate serves as the southwest entrance to the churchyard. It features two gabled side walls with reused granite coping. A carved spandrel, probably taken from the church, has been reset in the left-hand wall, and there is a reused granite cap at the apex of the right-hand wall. The entrance is divided in the center by a slate-rubble pier with a flat top that acts as a coffin rest. A granite cattle grid and a central slate slab create a stile between the coffin rest and the right-hand wall, while a timber gate is positioned between the coffin rest and the left-hand wall.
