Description

Rose Cottage is a house dating from around the 18th century. It features rendered and painted stone rubble, with part of the front elevation covered in slate hanging. The roof is made of rag slate, hipped at the left end and gabled at the right, continuing with a row of two cottages to the right. The rear elevation has a gable end, and there is a stone rubble end stack on the left with a brick shaft.

The building's plan has been altered; it originally extended to the rear as a row of almshouses, which have since been demolished. Rose Cottage is now a two-room, double-depth plan. The entrance was probably originally located on the front right, leading into a passage with a stair to the rear. The front room is heated by the stack on the left. In the mid to late 20th century, the entrance was moved to the left-hand side elevation, and a stair was possibly inserted next to the entrance, lit by a 20th-century stair window. There is also an entrance to an alleyway between Rose Cottage and the adjoining house on the right.

The house is two storeys tall with an almost symmetrical two-window front, featuring two 20th-century replacement 12-pane horned sashes on both the ground and first floors, each with timber lintels. The entrance to the alleyway is on the right, with slate hanging directly above it. The left-hand side elevation has a part-glazed door near the centre, with a 20th-century stair window to the right. There are two small windows on the ground and first floors that overlook the street. The interior was not accessible at the time of the survey.
