Description
Sharrocks and Sharrocks Cottage is a house and shop that has been converted into a flat and a house. It dates from the early 17th century, with an extension added to the front in the late 18th or early 19th century. The building is constructed from rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, topped with a rag slate roof, which is partly coated with bitumen at the front. The structure features a rear range with gable ends and a front wing that has a hipped end. There is a stone rubble axial stack and an adjoining brick shaft at the rear range, while the wing on the rear left is made of stone rubble with a slate roof and a stone rubble gable end stack.
The layout likely includes a rear range from the 17th century with a two-room plan, along with a one-room service range added to the rear left, which is heated by a gable end stack. The front range, added in the late 18th or early 19th century, consists of two rooms and a central entrance, with the larger room on the right formerly serving as a shop.
The building has two storeys. The rear range is set back and features a lean-to porch from the 20th century on the front left, along with a 19th-century two-light sliding sash window on the first floor. The front range on the right has an asymmetrical two-window front; the left side has a 19th-century four-pane sash window, a part-glazed 20th-century door, and two 12-pane hornless sashes to the right in a blocked shop window opening with a timber lintel. The first floor includes a 12-pane sash window on the left and another 12-pane sash window on the right in a half dormer with a raking roof.
Inside Sharrocks Cottage, the front wing features 19th-century ceiling beams. The rear range on the right has heavy cross beams and possibly the remains of a timber newel stair in front of the fireplace, which is served by the axial stack. The interior of Sharrocks on the left is not accessible. This building is part of a picturesque group in Fore Street, Boscastle.
