Description
Hilldene Cottage is a house and shop, originally built around the middle of the 18th century. It is situated on the west side of High Street in Boscastle. The construction is of rendered and painted slate-stone rubble, with a bitumen-coated rag slate roof, gabled ends, and a lean-to rag slate roof over a single-story extension on the front left. A slate roof with a gable end sits on the rear wing. A stone rubble stack with a rendered shaft is visible on the left-hand gable end.
The house may have originally had a single-room layout, with a stack on the higher left-hand gable end for heating. The rear wing, initially likely a lean-to outshot, was remodelled in the 19th century and partly rebuilt in the 20th. A single-story outshot was added to the front left around the middle of the 19th century.
The front façade is asymmetrical, featuring a two-window arrangement. A six-pane window and an eight-pane horned sash are located in the lean-to outshot on the left. A four-panel door, with glazing, is situated on the right, flanked by two six-pane windows. The first floor has a four-pane sash window in a gabled half-dormer on the left and a four-pane sash window to the right. The interior of the property has not been inspected.
Hilldene Cottage contributes to the picturesque group of buildings along High Street in Boscastle.
