Description
Round Tree Cottage is a house dating to approximately the early 18th century. It is built of rendered and painted slate-stone rubble and cob, with a rag slate roof, gable ends, and brick end stacks. The original plan comprised two rooms and a cross passage, with service rooms added to the rear in the late 18th century. The interior has been largely remodelled in the late 20th century.
The front of the house has an asymmetrical three-window arrangement, reflecting refenestration in the late 20th century. On the ground floor, the window to the left is a three-light greenstone window aligned with the fireplace of the adjacent room. This window is similar to one at the Old Post Office, Tintagel, and may be late 15th or early 16th century, possibly reset. Alternatively, it could be original to the building, suggesting substantial remodelling in the early 18th century, or it may be an early 18th-century survival. A two-light casement window with remnants of a slate hood and a 20th-century glazed door are situated near the centre, with a further 20th-century three-light window to the right. The first floor has two 20th-century windows within half-dormers, along with a central two-light casement.
During renovations, the remains of a circa 17th-century carved cornice, thought to be from a hall screen, were found reset in the rear outshot. The roof structure dates to the early 18th century, featuring principals and collars joined with lap joints and pegs.
