Description
This is a tombchest located 58 metres southeast of the Church of St Materiana in Tintagel, dating from 1740. It commemorates Christian Avery and her children, who were part of the family of William Avery of Tregeth. The tombchest marks the resting places of Sarah, who died in 1740 at 14 months; John, who died in 1752 at 8 years; Elizabeth, who died in 1752 at 4 years; another John, who died in 1754 at 2 years; Mary, who died in 1758 at 23 years; and Christian, William's wife, who died in 1759 at 47 years. The chest is made of slate-stone rubble and features a rectangular slate lid. It has an inscription and verse displayed in upper and lower case lettering with serifs.
