Description
Dorothy School is a schoolroom located next to the Church of St George, built around 1860. It is constructed from killas rubble with granite dressings and features a steep dry Delabole slate roof. The building has a granite stack over the gable and a larger stone stack near the south gable, along with a cast-iron ogee gutter. The design is in the Tudor Revival style with a rectangular plan.
The north gable end includes a central 5-light mullioned window with a relieving arch above. To the right, there is a 20th-century wing. The west range has a single window and a 20th-century wing on the left, a central 3-light window, and a blocked chamfered doorway on the right. The east range also has a single window, featuring a 3-light wooden transomed mullioned window towards the left and a lean-to porch at the far left, which has a pair of V-jointed boarded doors to its right. The roof slopes down to the right of the window, meeting a flat-roofed wing in front that has a central flat-headed chamfered doorway and a 2-light window on the right-hand return.
Inside, there is an original corbelled granite fireplace in the north-east corner and wall posts on corbels supporting the roof structure, which is otherwise concealed by a 20th-century ceiling. The building is included for its group value.
