Description

A pair of houses built in the mid-19th century, situated in a row on St George’s Road. The houses are constructed of stucco with a roof of scantle slate, featuring projecting eaves at the front. The chimneys are brick and there is a cast-iron ogee gutter to number 17 (the left-hand house). The design is based on a mirror-image plan, with parallel entrance halls in the center of the two houses, and a reception room at the front of each, with service rooms behind. The houses are two storeys high with a basement. They have a four-window front. The original hornless sash windows retain glazing bars. The front is symmetrical, with a pair of doorways in the middle, leading to an open porch supported by square columns. Number 17 retains its original panelled door and overlight; the ground-floor window on the right-hand side has only four panes. Windows of number 17 have moulded architraves, whereas the windows of number 18 have rusticated surrounds around the openings, including the doorway, and a rustication to the right. The interior has not been inspected. The shallow basement forecourts are bounded by retaining walls topped with iron railings featuring carved finials.
