Description

The Methodist Chapel in Bodmin is a Nonconformist chapel built in 1840. It features a façade of coursed rubble with a granite-coped plinth and steps, stucco imposts, and round arches on both floors. There is a mid-floor string and a moulded architrave string above the first-floor windows, along with a moulded central pediment flanked by parapets and small pediments. The chapel has dry slate roofs with moulded eaves and a rectangular aisleless plan that includes a gallery on three sides and an organ loft at the rear, designed in a classical style.

The building has two storeys with a symmetrical front consisting of one central bay flanked by three bays. The front includes three late 19th-century three-light transomed windows with single-spoked fanlight heads and coloured glass, positioned above three doorways that have plain fanlights and pairs of three-panel doors with glazed top panels. The projecting bays on either side each have a pair of two-pane horned sashes above a doorway with a blind fanlight, the date, and a pair of three-panel doors. The side elevations contain round-arched openings with 20th-century windows.

Inside, the chapel has been altered in the late 20th century but still retains panelled doors and reveals, as well as a moulded cornice in the entrance hall. The auditorium features a moulded plaster cornice and an elaborate central rose. There are late 19th-century pitch-pine gallery pews with panelled backs and rectangular chamfered ends, along with an old organ.
