Description

The Former Methodist Sunday School, also known as The Manor House, is a large schoolroom built in the late 19th century, located on Fore Street in Bodmin. It is related to the nearby Methodist chapel and features squared rubble brought to course with stone and brick dressings, including granite sills. The building has dry Delabole slate roofs with projecting eaves and verges, and crested clay ridge tiles, along with brick axial and rear lateral stacks.

Designed in an Italianate style, the structure has a deep irregular plan with wings projecting from the right-hand side and is built into a slope at the rear. It stands three storeys tall with a symmetrical three-bay front that includes a projecting central bay with a pediment. Most of the original windows are horned sashes. The central bay features paired sashes beneath a blind traceried lunette within the pediment, which is linked to a moulded impost string. Above a group of four first-floor sashes, there is a sill entablature over a moulded entablature, with pilaster mullions and capitals on the end pilasters.

The ground floor has four transomed casement windows set under an arcade of moulded round arches, also with pilaster mullions. Each flanking bay contains two round-arched lights above small triple lights, leading to a gabled and round-arched doorway with a moulded ordered arch on pilaster jambs, featuring 20th-century glazed doors. The right-hand return has a configuration of 1:2:1:1 bays, with the two recessed bays being two storeys tall and featuring tall traceried three-light round-arched first-floor windows. The three-storey flanking bays have triple lights on the upper floors, with round-arched heads on the second-floor lights. The right-hand bay has a similar window on its upper floor, while the other floors display segmental-arched openings. The interior has not been inspected.

This building is a notable example of a purpose-built Methodist schoolroom, distinguished by its Italianate style and prominently situated next to a group of listed buildings, including the chapel.
