Description
Smugglers is a house located on the west side of Forrabury and Fore Street in Boscastle, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with an extension added to the right gable end in the 18th century. The building features a rag slate roof with gable ends and a lower range on the right side, which also has a gable end. There is a stone rubble front lateral stack on the left and a low stone rubble stack on the right gable end. The lower range on the right includes a stone rubble end stack and a cloam oven projection.
The house likely started as two separate homes; the left range has a two-room and cross passage plan, with the left side probably serving as a kitchen heated by the front lateral stack, and the right side likely being a parlour heated by an end stack. The right-hand range from the 18th century consists of a one-room plan with an entrance on the left.
The building is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical window arrangement with two windows on the left and one on the right, with the ground rising steeply to the left. The left range features an early 19th-century 16-pane hornless sash window on the left, a 20th-century door in a partly blocked opening, and a shallow 19th-century bay window to the right with glazing bars. On the first floor, there are two possibly 19th-century two-light casements. The lower range on the right has a 20th-century part-glazed door and two-light casements on the left, with a two-light casement in a gabled half-dormer above.
The interior is not accessible, but an inspection could reveal interesting details about the internal features and roof structure. Smugglers is noted as a particularly unaltered picturesque house in the centre of Boscastle village.
