Description

Ingledene and Martindale are two houses located on the north side of Forrabury and Dunn Street in Boscastle, dating from around the 18th century, with extensions added in the early 19th century. The buildings are constructed of slate stone rubble, with some parts rendered and others featuring slate hanging above the ground floor on the front elevation. They have a rag slate roof, which is cement washed on the front of Ingledene and has a hipped end on the rear wing of Martindale. Brick stacks are present on the gable ends.

The original layout may have been that of a single house with a two-room and central entrance plan, which is now part of Ingledene, along with an unheated rear wing to the left, which is part of Martindale. The right-hand gable end has been extended with an additional range that follows a two-room single depth plan.

The buildings are two storeys high and present an overall five-window front. Ingledene, on the left, features a symmetrical three-window front with two replacement 12-pane horned sash windows flanking a central part-glazed four-panel door, which is sheltered by a 20th-century brick gabled porch. Above the ground floor, the slate hanging is complemented by three early 19th-century 12-pane hornless sash windows with exposed sash boxes. The elevation of the two-storey extension on the right is asymmetrical, with some openings altered. The rear wing, now part of Martindale, also has two storeys and features an entrance on the right-hand side elevation, with a 20th-century glazed porch and a two-light casement window to the right. The first floor includes an early 18th-century 12-pane sash window with heavy glazing bars, which may have been reused in a half-dormer window with a raking roof.

The buildings contribute significantly to the unspoilt character of the street in the centre of Boscastle village.
