Description

This building is a bank barn located about 20 metres east of Birchenhayes Farmhouse, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with a later 19th-century addition. It is constructed from slatestone rubble with stone dressings and features a hipped slate roof with ridge tiles.

The barn is built into the bank at the rear, with a shippon on the ground floor and a barn above. There is a later 19th-century open-fronted linhay attached to the rear left, along with a lean-to set in the angle to the rear right. The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front. The ground floor includes three round-arched shippon doorways with dressed stone heads, two of which have ventilator doors. There is a loading doorway with double doors and a pentice hood above it. To the left, an external stone stair leads to an upper door, with the hood above it continuing from the loading door. There is also a single door with a cambered stone head on the ground floor to the left. The right end of the barn is blind, while the left end features a ground floor window with a stone head and a first floor window with a timber lintel. At the rear, there is a loading door with a hood that corresponds to the front door. The single storey lean-to is located in the angle of the linhay to the rear left, which is open-fronted and has crested ridge tiles on the roof. The interior has not been inspected.
