Description
Lake Barn is a bank barn dating from the early 19th century, with alterations made around the mid-19th century and a few later modifications. It is constructed from slatestone rubble with stone dressings and features a hipped slurried slate roof topped with ridge tiles.
The barn's layout includes a cow house on the ground floor and a granary loft above. There is a projecting wing at the rear right, which may have originally served as a horse engine shed. Two additional bays were added to the right end in the mid-19th century, along with an outshut along the rear of the main structure.
The front exterior has four doorways at ground level, each with segmental stone heads; the two central doors are half blocked. There is a central upper loading door with a pitched slate hood and a small two-light window to the right at the upper level. To the right, there is a straight joint leading to one additional bay at the same height, which has a door with a cambered stone head. A second straight joint leads to a further bay set back to the right as a lean-to, featuring a door with a segmental head and a ventilation slit above. On the left side, there is a door with a timber lintel leading to the loft, and a straight joint to the rear outshut, which also has a door with a timber lintel. The rear has a central door to the loft, with a single-storey lean-to from the 19th century to the right and the engine house to the left, which has a loft above and access through a rear door.
Inside, the main building has a five-bay roof supported by principal rafters, a tie-beam, and king posts, with two rows of purlins resting on the backs of the principals and iron braces connecting to the tie-beams. The walls are plastered, and the rear wall features a large sack hoist pulley wheel, which is geared from below and includes wooden cogs, metal spokes, and a frame. There are two upper window openings in the right end wall, which were formerly external. At ground level, there is a doorway with a segmental head leading into the rear range.
