Description
Smuggler’s Cottage is a house dated 1795, situated on Finnygook Lane in Portwrinkle. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble with a slate roof featuring red clay ridge tiles and gabled ends. The house has large rendered gable end stacks capped with stone. The original layout comprised two rooms, with a central entrance passage that likely contained a staircase. The left-hand room was likely the kitchen, and the right-hand room the parlour, both heated by the gable end chimney stacks. Later rear outshuts have been added.
The two-storey house presents a symmetrical three-window facade. It contains 2-light casement windows with glazing bars, all replacements from the 20th century. A central plank door is set within a rendered stone porch with a hipped, slurried slate roof. There is an 8-pane casement window at first-floor level in each gable end. Large masonry raking buttresses are prominent, including one added to the right of the front facade and one at each gable end. The interior of the house has not been inspected.
