Description

Vernon Cottage is a cottage dated 1787, though it has been altered in the 20th century. The ground floor is faced with mathematical tiles in a Sussex bond, featuring some grey headers; the first floor is tile-hung with some courses of curved tiles. It has an old tiled roof, hipped to the right, and a left-side brick chimneystack with the date 1787. An outshut is located to the rear.

The cottage is two storeys high and has two windows. The first floor has 20th-century, three-light metal-framed casements. The ground floor features a 19th-century brick gabled weather porch with curved bargeboards, and a 20th-century lounge extension.

The interior shows a remarkable survival of original fittings, including an open fireplace with two alcoves, and two cupboards with H hinges to the right. A plank door leads to a wooden winder staircase. A small room in the outshut, known as 'the Smugglers,' likely served as storage space or a bedroom. The first-floor bedroom has a plank door on pintle hinges, with two cupboards fitted with L hinges. A beam displays run-out stops and traces of crossed-out figures. The attic has an angled queen strut roof with pegged rafters, an added ridge piece and old oak floorboards. The outshut also has an angled queen post roof. The lounge features run-out stops to the spine beam and a six-panelled door. The cellar has a brick floor and a round-headed alcove.

Attached to the left-hand side is a bakehouse with a bread oven.
