Description

The Little Cottage is a cottage that dates back to the 17th century or earlier. It was nearly entirely demolished in the early 18th century, leaving only the 17th-century external brick chimneystack and part of the adjoining ground floor room. Initially, a one-bay extension was added in diaper brickwork, followed shortly by another bay in plain brickwork. An early 19th-century outshut was constructed at the rear. There is a 20th-century porch at the rear of the chimneystack and a small lean-to in front. The left bay is made of red brick with black headers, while the right-hand bay features brown brick on the ground floor and orange brick above. The cottage has a tiled roof and an external brick chimneystack made of 17th-century brickwork, with kneelers on the left side. The left gable has a tiled finish with a small attic window, and the right gable exposes a tie beam and collar beam. The building has two storeys and two windows, with 20th-century casements in enlarged openings, including a bay window on the left side of the ground floor. The rear porch is timber-framed and of 20th-century origin, and there is a 20th-century lean-to brick extension in front of the stack. The early 19th-century catslide outshot is located at the rear.

Inside, there is an open fireplace with a wooden bressumer and an arched salt niche. The attached ground floor barn features 2-inch chamfered spine beams and floor joists with run-out stops. Another room contains a 1½-inch chamfered axial beam and an 18th-century winder stair. The first floor has a sooted tie beam and an 18th-century tie beam roof above. An early 19th-century fireplace has a later arched opening with Minton tiles. The cottage has wide pine floorboards, which are aligned differently in each room. There is a series of early 19th-century plank doors on pintle hinges, including one with a circular cut-out leading to the outshut, which has a brick floor.
