Description

The Pirbright War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920 by Frederick Brook Hitch. It is made of stone and features a carved wooden cross and figure of Christ. The memorial includes a finely-carved wooden Calvary cross set on a four-step stone plinth. At the base, there are four rectangular stone plaques arranged horizontally among square paving stones. The front plaque has the inscription “GREATER LOVE / HATH NO MAN / THAN THIS THAT / A MAN LAY / DOWN HIS LIFE / FOR HIS FRIENDS” (John 15:13). The two side plaques list the names of 48 individuals who fell in the First World War, while a later plaque at the rear commemorates 11 individuals who fell in the Second World War.
