Description

The milestone located to the east of the Glebe in St Mellion dates from between 1764 and 1785. It is made of granite and features a rectangular ashlar post with a rounded head. The post is incised with black painted lettering that includes serifs, indicating the distance to Callington, which is marked as 3½ miles. There is also a bench mark inscribed below the distance. The milestone was established by the Callington Turnpike Trust, which was set up in 1764 under the act 4 Geo III C48. This trust was responsible for the road that continued 'by Brendon's Tree over Viverdon Down, through St Mellion to Penter's Cross', with the route extending to Botus Fleming in 1785.
