Description
2 Paynters Cross is a pair of attached estate houses, now functioning as a single residence. Likely built in the 18th century, it was remodeled around the mid-19th century, incorporating features from the 17th century, with only a few later alterations. The structure is constructed of slatestone rubble with granite dressings and is partly rendered. It has a slate roof adorned with crested ridge tiles and gable ends, featuring gable end stacks with cornices; the left stack has a rendered shaft while the right has a rubble shaft.
Originally, the building had a two-room plan with a central entrance and gable end stacks. A lean-to outshut on the right side is probably a later 18th or early 19th-century addition. In the mid-19th century, the house was divided into two cottages, with the central entrance serving the left cottage and a new doorway added to the front for the right cottage. The left side includes a one-room plan service wing at the rear, which is unheated, while the right side has a single-storey lean-to for service at the back.
The exterior features two storeys and an asymmetrical three-window front. On the first floor, there are three chamfered granite two-light windows with casements. The ground floor has a similar three-light window with hood moulds on the left and right, alongside a central doorway with a rounded arch and a plain door. A lean-to porch at the right end has a four-centred arched chamfered granite doorway with a plain door. The left end is rendered, and the left side wing is two-storey, featuring similar two-light granite casements with hood moulds on both floors. The rear of the wing has a rendered hipped roof and a VR letterbox. The inner side of the wing has a plain door, and the rear of the main range includes a single-storey rubble lean-to with a side door. The interior has not been inspected.
