Description
Clear House is a house built around the 1830s, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of painted local stone rubble with granite quoins, and the rear and southwest side are rendered. The roof is gable-ended, covered with asbestos tiles, and features exposed rafter-ends at the eaves, along with brick gable-end stacks.
The house has a single-depth, three-bay layout with a central entrance. It stands two storeys tall, with an attic and a basement. The symmetrical northwest front has three bays, with windows that have cambered brick arches and small keystones. The first-floor windows include 12-pane and 16-pane sashes, with the left window replaced and having a raised cill. The ground floor features later 4-pane sashes. The central doorway is framed by a pilastered doorcase with an entablature, panelled reveals, and a rectangular overlight with intersecting glazing bars above a six-panel door. There is a small arched bridge leading from the street to the doorway over the basement area, which also has a flush-panel door.
The rear southeast side has 20th-century windows, and there are small attic windows at the gable ends. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to have original chimneypieces, a staircase, and mahogany doors. Clear House is a notable example of a late Georgian house, prominently located in Fowey with views overlooking the harbour, and it has group value within its setting.
