Description
Apsley House is a house built around 1770, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It features limestone rubble dressings, which were originally roughcast or stucco, along with stone gable stacks and a stone slate mansard roof. The house is designed in a mid-Georgian style with a double-depth plan.
The exterior consists of two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, arranged in a symmetrical three-window range. The front is characterized by rusticated quoins, a frieze, a cornice, and a parapet, all set proud to accommodate a render coat. The Neo-classical Doric doorcase is notable, featuring attached columns on raised bases supporting an entablature with triglyphs and a pediment. There are steps leading up to a six-panel door, with the top pair being glazed. The windows have raised surrounds and consist of 6/6-pane sashes, with small cellar lights located below the ground-floor windows, and three gabled casement dormers.
The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted to have a central passage divided by a round arch, stone fire surrounds, and panelled shutters.
