Description
This milestone, located 230 meters south-west of Bosworgey Cottage in St Columb Major, was erected around 1852 and is positioned on the south side of the road. The milestone is made of granite and has a triangular shape, standing approximately 0.56 meters high with a pyramidal top. Its front faces are inscribed in sans serif capitals with the words "COLAN / CHURCH / 3" and "ST / COLUMB / 1". The stone is painted white, with the inscriptions highlighted in black.
The milestone is part of a small group installed by the St Columb Highway Board, which managed local roads starting in 1835. It is closely dated to around 1852, as one of the other milestones in the group bears this date. These roads were not adopted as main or turnpike roads, making the presence of milestones on them quite unusual.
This milestone is designated for its intact condition, being a complete example from around 1852 that remains in its original location. It is notable for being situated on a parish road rather than a turnpike road and is part of a small group of milestones, two of which are also designated at Grade II. The milestone holds historic interest as it reflects the significant road improvements of the 18th century.
