Description
Milestone 65 meters east of Sunny Corner is a Grade II listed milestone, erected around 1852. This granite stone has a triangular shape and stands approximately 0.74 meters high, featuring a pyramidal top. The front faces of the milestone are inscribed in sans serif capitals with the words "COLAN / CHURCH / 3" and "ST / COLUMB / 1". It is set on a rectangular stone base and is painted white, with the lettering highlighted in black.
Historically, this milestone is part of a small group placed along one of two parish roads connecting St Columb Major and Colan, installed by the St Columb Highway Board, which managed local roads from 1835. The milestone is closely dated to around 1852, as one in the group bears this date. These roads were not adopted as main or turnpike roads, making the presence of milestones on them quite unusual.
The milestone is designated at Grade II for its historic interest as a notable example of 1850s stonework, its intact condition in its original location, and its group value alongside other remaining milestones on this road, two of which are also designated at Grade II.
