Description
The mortuary chapels, built around 1856, are a pair of Gothic-style structures located on Trekenning Road in St Columb Major. They are constructed from squared granite rubble with granite dressings and feature steeply pitched slate roofs adorned with crested ridge tiles and gable ends that have raised coped verges. Each chapel has a symmetrical single cell plan, with a gabled porch at the front and a ritual east at the rear.
The exterior of each chapel includes a granite plinth, weathered angle buttresses, and additional buttresses on the sides. The front features a gabled porch with a two-centred arched doorway, and the inner doorway also has a two-centred arch with a door that has raised fillets. Above the porch is a circular window with three quatrefoils in its tracery. Each side of the chapels has two bays separated by buttresses, with two lancet windows that have hood moulds, and some lattice glazing remains. The rear of each chapel has a three-light Perpendicular window with a two-centred arch and a hood mould.
Inside, the chapel on the right is simply plastered and has a four-bay arched-brace roof. The central truss of this roof rises from stone corbels and features both a collar and a king post.
