Description
The gateway at the west entrance to the mortuary chapels was built around 1856. It is constructed from random granite rubble and granite ashlar, featuring cast iron gates. The central pair of square plan ashlar piers stands about 2½ metres high and has shaped caps with cushion finials. The pair of cast iron gates includes trefoil finials at the top and mid rails. The wall on each side sweeps forward and is approximately 2 metres high, topped with granite coping. To the right, there is a terminal pier designed in the same style. The left side features a terminal pier with a pedestrian gateway, which has a lower plain pier with a flat cap and a similar single cast iron gate.
