Milestone South-West Of Trevithick Pond

This is a milestone located south-west of Trevithick Pond in St Columb Major, erected around 1852. It stands on the south side of the road and is made of granite, shaped like a triangle in plan. The milestone is approximately 0.56 meters high and features a pyramidal top. Its front faces are inscribed in sans serif capitals with the text "THE FIR H.../ 1½ / COLAN / 2" and "ST / COLUMB / 2". One of the upper corners is chipped, which has removed the last three letters of the "The Fir Hill" inscription. The stone is painted white, with the lettering highlighted in black.

This milestone is part of a small group that was erected by the St Columb Highway Board, which managed local roads from 1835. It is closely dated to around 1852, as one of the milestones in the group is clearly marked with this date. Notably, these roads were never adopted as main or turnpike roads, making the presence of milestones on them quite unusual.

The milestone is designated at Grade II due to its intact condition, as it remains in its original position and is uniquely located on a parish road rather than a turnpike road. It also holds group value as one of a small number of milestones still present on this road, with two others also designated at Grade II. Additionally, it has historic interest as it reflects the significant road improvements of the 18th century, particularly in a context that is not typical for milestones.
