Milestone Approx 28M South-East Of Trekenning Cottage

This milestone, located approximately 28 meters southeast of Trekenning Cottage in St Columb Major, was erected in the mid-19th century. It is made of granite and has a triangular shape with a rectangular base and a pyramidal top, standing about 1 meter high. The front faces of the milestone are inscribed with the names of locations: "BODMIN / TRURO / ST AUSTELL" on one side and "TREBADANNON / 1M / NEWLYN / CRANTOCK / 9M / CUBERT 10" on the other, both accompanied by direction arrows. The pyramidal top features the inscription "ST COLUMB / 1M" on its north face. The entire milestone is painted white, with the lettering highlighted in black.

Historically, this milestone is part of a small group that was erected on various parish roads near St Columb Major in the mid-19th century by the St Columb Highway Board, which managed the roads in the parish starting in 1835. These roads were not adopted as main or turnpike roads, making the presence of milestones on them quite unusual. Other milestones from this Board share a similar design, but this one is unique due to its top inscription.

The milestone is designated as Grade II due to its historic interest as a notable example of mid-19th century stonework, its intact condition in its original location, and its group value as part of a small collection of similar milestones along this road, two of which are also designated at Grade II.
