Description
No 42, known as The Old Tollhouse, is a tollhouse built around the mid-19th century. It is constructed of slatestone rubble with granite quoins, jambstones, and sills. The roof is hipped and covered with asbestos slate, featuring slightly projecting eaves and a central brick axial stack. Originally designed with two rooms and a small lobby in between, there is now a small 20th-century addition at the rear. The building is a single storey with a symmetrical two-window south front. The central doorway has a ledged door and an overlight above it. The original windows are 16-pane hornless sashes. The structure includes a rubble plinth, cambered brick arches, and moulded plaster hoods supported by consoles, although one console above the doorway is missing. The interior has not been inspected.
