Description
This listing describes a terrace of four houses, numbered 11, 12 (Tideways), 13, and 14 St John's Terrace, along with a garden wall and railings to the south. Built in the mid-19th century, the houses are constructed from Killas rubble, featuring granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels. They have dry Delabole slate roofs with brick chimneys on the gable ends and one axial brick chimney over the middle party wall. The layout consists of two one-room wide houses in the middle, flanked by two houses that are two-rooms wide. No 11, on the west side, has a parallel early 19th-century range to the rear with a wing at right angles.
The terrace is two storeys high, with south-west facing fronts. Each house has a two-window front. Nos 12 and 13 are narrower and have doorways under the right-hand windows, while Nos 11 and 14 have symmetrical fronts with central doorways. No 11 features a four-panel top-glazed door with an overlight and a lattice porch. Nos 12 and 13 have 20th-century glazed porches, and No 14 has a 20th-century door. No 11 retains original 12-pane hornless sash windows, while Nos 12 and 13 have later sash windows, and No 14 has 20th-century windows. The cast iron ogee gutters are also notable. The rear wing of No 11 includes three early 19th-century bowed nine-pane windows with curved panes.
The interior of No 11 boasts an open well open string stair and six-panel doors, although the interiors of Nos 12, 13, and 14 have not been inspected. The front is enclosed by low granite coped rubble walls topped with rail and dowel fencing, complete with matching gates.
This terrace is part of a row of similar contemporary houses in St John's Terrace, creating an impressive group despite some later alterations to individual houses.
