Description

The Market House, along with its gate-piers and boundary wall, is a market house that is now part of Devoran Primary School. It was built around the mid-19th century and features slatestone walls with a granite plinth, sills, strings, jambstones, and quoins. The building has brick arches and hipped roofs made of corrugated asbestos, with a valley between them. The layout consists of two adjoining rectangular areas: the southern area has one room, while the northern area is narrower and includes an entrance vestibule, a stair, and a small room projection at the rear left (east).

Designed in the Italianate style, the structure is two storeys high and has a three-window south front that overlooks a courtyard. The windows, which were replaced around 1900, are round-headed sashes with horns and glazing bars. The plinth features reticulated rusticated ashlar, with a plain impost string and a moulded mid-floor string. The ground floor windows, which are in partly blocked openings, were originally doorways. The west front, facing the street, has similar architectural details, with a slightly projecting bay on the left that includes a central ground floor entrance with a panelled door and a fanlight above. There are two grouped first-floor windows above this entrance. The right-hand section originally had two arched openings at plinth level, but now has a doorway on the left with the plinth removed and a partly blocked opening to the right with an iron grill. The first floor has a group of three windows, and granite keystones are present above the round-headed arches.

Inside, the building retains its original stair, which features an octagonal newel, turned balusters, and a moulded mahogany handrail, along with original floors and roof structure. The gate-piers are square granite monoliths topped with ogee-shaped pyramidal caps.
