7/63 The Market House, gate-piers and boundary wall

Market house, now part of Devoran Primary School, gate-piers and boundary wall. Circa mid C19. Slatestone walls with granite plinth, sills, strings, jambstones and quoins. Brick arches. Hipped corrugated asbestos roofs with valley between. Plan of 2 adjoining rectangular areas, the one to right (south) of 1 room, and that to left (north) narrower for entrance vestibule, stair, and small 1 room projection to rear left (east). Italianate style. 2 storeys. 3-window south front overlooking courtyard. Circa 1900 replacement round-headed sashes with horns and glazing bars. Plinth of reticulated rusticated ashlar, plain impost string and moulded mid-floor string. Ground floor windows in partly blocked openings were originally doorways. West, street front, has similar detail. Bay to left is slightly broken forward with central ground floor entrance with panelled door and fanlight over. 2 first floor windows grouped together. Right-hand part, originally with 2 arched openings from plinth level, has doorway, left, with plinth removed and partly blocked opening to right with iron grill. Group of 3 windows to first floor. Granite keystones to round-headed arches. Interior has original stair with octagonal newel, turned balusters and moulded mahogany handrail. Original floors and roof structure. Gate-piers are square-on-plan granite monoliths with ogee shaped pyramidal caps.
