Description

A mid-19th century terrace of three houses, along with a garden wall and railings to the front. The houses are constructed from local kills rubble with granite quoins, jambstones and lintels. They have hipped, mostly grouted scantle slate roofs with wide eaves to the front and brick chimneys located over each side wall and over the party wall between numbers 9 and 10. Numbers 8 and 9 have single-room, double-depth plans with coupled central entrances, while number 10 has a two-room, double-depth plan with a central entrance hall.

The southwest front of numbers 8 and 9 features a two-window design with doorways grouped towards the middle and a window above each doorway. A porch, dating from around 1900, has coloured glass sidelights and an overlight with arched lights. Number 10 has a symmetrical three-window front with a central doorway and a 20th-century door with overlight. All windows on the front are original 12-pane hornless sashes. Cast iron ogee gutters are also present.

The interior of number 10 remains largely unaltered, retaining an open-well staircase with a wreathed mahogany handrail over a newel post, original six-panel doors, panelled window shutters, niches beside the chimney breasts, and one fireplace with original surrounds and corner blocks. The interiors of numbers 8 and 9 were not inspected.

A low granite coped rubble wall runs along the front, with a rail and dowel fence to numbers 8 and 9, and a rail and rectangular baluster fence to number 10. A matching gate is situated between granite round-headed monolith piers. The terrace is part of a row of contemporary houses in St Johns Terrace, forming an impressive group, despite later alterations to some of the properties.
