Description
This entry describes a pair of houses, numbered 16 and 17 St John's Terrace, along with a garden wall to the south and west. Built in the mid-19th century, the houses are constructed from killas stone with granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels. They feature hipped roofs with wide eaves and brick chimneys on the side walls and over the party wall. House number 16 has an asbestos slate roof, while number 17 retains its original grouted scantle slate roof.
Each house has a two-room layout with a central entrance hall and linked outshuts at the rear that contain service rooms. They are two storeys high and face southwest. Both houses have symmetrical three-window fronts with central doorways, which have been replaced with 20th-century doors. There are early to mid-20th-century glazed conservatories added to the front. Number 16 has horned 12-paned sash windows, while number 17 features horned two-pane sash windows.
The front is enclosed by a low granite coped rubble wall with granite monolith piers. This pair of houses is part of a row of similar contemporary buildings in St John's Terrace, creating an impressive group despite some later alterations to individual houses.
