Description

A pair of houses, numbers 28 and 29, dating to the 1840s, along with front garden walls and railings to the south. The construction is of killed rubble with granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels, the lintels incised to resemble voussoirs. The roof is hipped, covered with partly grouted scantle slate, featuring wide eaves and brick chimneys on the side walls and over the party wall.

Each house follows a two-room plan with a central staircase and rear service rooms within an integral outshut. On the south front, each house presents a symmetrical two-window facade with a central doorway. The original six-panel doors are now within 20th-century porches. They have horned two-pane sashes, and slate sills with lead flashing underneath.

The interior was not inspected.

A low granite coped rubble wall runs along the front, with a rail and dowel wooden fence and a matching gate. These houses are part of a row of similar contemporary properties in St John's Terrace, forming an impressive group, despite later alterations to some of the buildings.
