Description
A pair of houses with a front garden wall and fence, dating to the 1840s. The construction is of local killas rubble with granite quoins, jamb stones, and lintels, topped with a hipped roof featuring wide eaves and brick chimneys. No. 23 (the western house) retains its original slurried scantle slate roof, while No. 24 has asbestos slates.
These double-depth, semi-detached houses are mirror images of each other, with paired central entrance halls and principal front rooms on the right and left sides, and service rooms behind. The south front is symmetrical with four windows, all featuring original 12-pane hornless sash windows. The central windows are grouped closer together, each with a doorway positioned beneath. No. 23 has a top-glazed four-panel door with overlight; No. 24 has a possibly original six-panel door with overlight. The property includes cast iron ogee gutters and lead flashing under the slate sills.
The front garden is enclosed by a low granite coped rubble wall. No. 23 has a wooden rail and dowel fence and an original gate, which was removed for painting on 12 March 1985. The houses are part of a row of similar contemporary properties in St. John's Terrace, forming an impressive group, despite later alterations to some of the houses. The interior was not inspected.
