Description
Lloyds Bank is a former market house built in the mid to late 19th century. It features stuccoed walls and a hipped dry Delabole slate roof with slightly projecting eaves. The building has an L-shaped plan, consisting of two rooms wide and three rooms deep, with a central through passage and originally an axial passage in front of the rear south rooms. There is a small 20th-century extension on the left side.
The exterior is single storey, although it was originally two storeys. The stucco detailing is consistent on all sides, with a textured granite ashlar plinth, chamfered rustications at the impost string level, and round arches with alternate rustications on the voussoirs. The quoins and piers that punctuate the bays on the north and west fronts are also rusticated. Above the pier shafts and the tall keystones of the arches is an entablature featuring a moulded architrave, a plain frieze, and a moulded eaves cornice.
Both the north and south entrance fronts are symmetrical with three bays and central doorways, with the north front being wider. The north doorway is topped with a moulded stucco arch that has moulded imposts, and it features original panelled doors. Above the south doors is an original geometric and spoked fanlight. The west front includes a 19th-century shop window on the left side of the middle bay, which has a pair of round-headed lights with glazed spandrels within a square-headed opening. Other windows are either original or large-paned horned sashes from the late 19th century. The interior has not been inspected.
