Description
Newton Lodge is a tollhouse built around 1850. It is constructed from local stone that is squared and randomly coursed, with ashlar dressings made of Ham stone. The roof is made of Welsh slate and features table copings. The building is a one-storey block divided into two sections facing Newton Road, with a two-storey rear extension along South Western Terrace.
The left section facing Newton Road has an angled bay window with stone mullions and a roof, featuring four lights with cast iron cements that are diagonally glazed. The door, which is from the late 20th century, has a simple chamfer surround and a hood mould. To the right, in the slightly lower section, there is a two-light matching mullioned window with a label above it.
On the return to South Western Terrace, there is a prominent stone flue with angled offsets at the gable, followed by a three-light mullioned window with rectangular panes under a label, and a two-light matching window above set in a gable. The interior has not been seen. There is a very similar house located at No 198 Mudford Road in Yeovil Without.
